NTV buys 4 new Pendolino

According to rumors, the color will be a red fire more clear and bright than that of the AGV 575 already in circulation, but what is certain is that after the eight Pendolino bought in October 2015, with a contract worth 460 million Euros, NTV tips even higher and has also published the purchase of other four high-speed trains. Convoys different from those currently circulating, able to travel with optimum performance both on the high-speed lines and on the traditional ones. With them, in fact, NTV plans to boost the Milano-Napoli adding new trains to the fleet of AGV already in service but also to cover new routes in new directions and especially the one of the North West-North-East. From Torino to Venezia via Milano.

The agreement signed between the President of NTV Andrea Faragalli Zenobi and Michele Viale, CEO of Alstom provides for the extension from 20 to 30 years the maintenance of the entire fleet of new trains. The stated goal is to reach, as early as 2016, 10 million passengers (in 2015 exceeded 9 million, + 40% compared to 2014).

"The expansion of the fleet, which will arrive at 37 trains, is an integral part of our industrial project of revitalization started last year - said Faragalli Zenobi - we want to make more and more widespread the presence of High Speed services in the country and thanks to these four additional trains we will serve new destinations and at the same time strengthened existing ones such as the Milano-Napoli ".

The new Pendolino NTV will travel at a speed of 250 kilometers per hour, is 187 meters long with 7 coaches for 480 passengers. "The muzzle - says the company - will be futuristic and designed for high performance in the event of impact and better aerodynamic performance." It will also be eco-friendly and entirely produced in Italy.

Ambrosetti Forum: The CEO of Ferrovie dello Stato Mazzoncini meets Russian Vice-President Dvorkocich

Meeting at the lake of Como, between the Managing Director and CEO of Ferrovie dello Stato Renato Mazzoncini and Russian Vice-President Arkady Dvorkocich, on the sidelines of the Ambrosetti Forum in progress in Cernobbio.

In the meeting, Mazzoncini and Dvorkocich faced the issues related to the collaboration between the Italian and Russian Railways on July 6 with the signing of a memorandum of understanding for railways cooperation.

The memorandum provides, in fact, common development, by FS and Russian Railways, of the projects for the construction and modernization of railway infrastructure, in addition to the supply of products and services for logistics and transport of goods and passengers. The agreement also provides for cooperation in the construction of high-speed lines in Russia, as well as joint projects for the construction of new railway infrastructure in other countries.

Gotthard trains struggle with wind resistance

The first passenger trains are set to pass through the Gotthard Base Tunnel on December 11 – but how fast will they be travelling? Greater wind resistance than expected is slowing them down and threatening to play havoc with the timetable.

Instead of the planned 200km/h, a physical phenomenon apparently overlooked by engineers means the trains running through the longest rail tunnel in the world will have a top speed of only 160-180km/h, according to a report in the NZZ am Sonntag.

The problem is air columns. Out in the open these air flows created by every moving body can easily escape sideways or upwards. In a tunnel, there is not much room – especially in the 57km Gotthard, which for economic reasons was built almost 10% narrower than the Lötschberg Tunnel for example.

The air columns must therefore be moved along both one-way tunnels by the trains – which requires a lot of energy. “In this case the trains act like pistons in a bike pump,” an engineer told the NZZ am Sonntag.

The problem is exacerbated by slow goods trains, which also use the tunnel but have a top speed of only 100km/h. These take 41 minutes to get through the tunnel compared with around 19 minutes for passenger trains.

In theory, the Gotthard timetable is a thing of logistical beauty. Most of the time five trains are travelling in each direction: two goods trains travelling quite close together, one passenger train and two more goods trains. The fast passenger train enters the tunnel just ahead of two goods trains, catches up with the two goods trains ahead of it and leaves the tunnel just behind them. This system, which has a 30-minute rhythm, fits perfectly into Switzerland’s scheduled timetable.

In practice, however, the four goods trains slow down the moving air packet by 100km/h – the difference between the trains’ speeds.

Based on non-representative test runs, engineers reckon 10%-20% will be knocked off the passenger trains’ top speed. More test runs, which will be technically representative, are set to begin on Monday.

If the slower times are confirmed, the timetable will have to be rewritten with fewer than 100 days until the first passengers climb aboard.

Poland: New line for-high speed trains

We talk about high-speed trains between Warsaw and Łódż with a branch to Poznań and Wrocław. A project of more than 460 kilometers with the train that will go at speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour, an investment of over one billion zlotys, whose finalization is expected in 2023.

In previous years, there has been a similar project planned for 2016 but it was never implemented. The next plan is the widening of the Krakow-Katowice line with another 150 kilometers of track.

The maximum speed for trains in Poland is 220, 230 kilometers per hour. To get to 300 as the trains in other countries of Europe should be build a system with a different electrification. Then there is the desire to join by 2030 the railway lines between Poland and Czech Republic.

According to Marcel Klinowski, head of the transportation group "Stowarzyszenia Republikanie" this project is important and there is money to implement it. According to Jakub Majewski, head of the foundation Pro Kolej, there is no need of trains with a speed of 300 or 350 kilometers per hour given that the distances between the Polish cities are not as great as they are in other countries, such as France.

Trains, reopen the Siracusa-Catania

It was the regional train started from the station of Syracuse this morning at 6.20 to inaugurate the reopening of the railway route Siracusa-Catania after nearly three months of closure.

Because of work of speeding up and modernization that affected a stretch of 70 km between Bicocca and Augusta, last 20 June, the line had been closed between the controversies surrounding the choice of the summer period.

The modernization work, partial (a second operation is planned in 2017, for a total investment of 82 millions), concerned "the technological systems for traffic management - says RFI - with the installation of new signals and sophisticated safety equipment in the stations of Lentini and Agnone."

Some route changes were also made, built a new gallery and a flyover between Lentini and Carlentini, in order to eliminate some level crossings. These actions have improved journey times. Today you can get to Syracuse from Catania in an hour and seven minutes (at a cost of 6.90 Euros): a reduction of 9 minutes, than before.

More precisely, the video was filmed on a moving train, on a railway track situated in the Neneh Valley, near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, England, on a hot day in June '89.

It was a Freddie Mercury’s idea to use in the video, in the part of the masked woman who gets up from the tracks at the beginning of the video, the British model Debbie Leng, despite her mate, the drummer Roger Taylor, was not initially agree.

Arrive in Sicily the first two trains "jazz"

News in the regional Trenitalia’s rail vehicles park with the arrival in Sicily of the first two ETR425, dubbed by Ferrovie dello Stato Jazz.

The new trains, ETR425 093 and ETR425 094, departed yesterday from Alstom's plant of Savigliano (Cuneo) and landed with the railway ship Scilla in the second cradle of Messina Marittima this morning. After a technical stop in Messina Centrale, the two trains were transferred to Palermo.

These new trains Jazz are part of a total supply of six trains and are included in the program of investments that Trenitalia has provided in the Service Contract with the Region of Sicily. It is a long-awaited delivery since the last time that new trains had arrived in the region dates back to 2004, with forty Minuetto (30 ALe501 and 10 ALn501) still in service today.

The trains Jazz built in Italy by Alstom will be made shortly available for Sicilian commuters. For their technical characteristics, they are particularly suited to regional traffic, airport and subway.

They consist of five carriages (crates), have a length of 82.2 meters, 292 seats (+ 2 disabled people and +15 folding seats), interior lighting and LEDs, and are equipped with electrical outlets to 220 V and preparation for Wi-Fi.

Equipped with four engines (two motor vehicles), powered at 3 kV or 1.5 kV, they reach a top speed of 160 km/h, and thanks to the automatic hook type Scharfenberg, can be quickly coupled to a second convoy (up to 2 complexes without any limitation).

Trenitalia, schedules and trains integrated in Google Maps

Plan your trip to suit your requirements has become even easier. Trenitalia with Google brings information about their routes and schedules directly on Google Maps, thanks to Google Transit, the function that allows you to better plan your trip, choosing the most appropriate courses up to the nearest public transportation in urban areas.

Travelers can then arrange, from PCs and mobile, the latest information for all routes operated by Trenitalia, the Italian railway transportation company of the FS Group. Just enter the starting point and desired arrival and it will appear on Google Maps, in addition to the directions, even the icons of railway stations and trains of the Italian FS Group.

Switch from information on travel to purchase will be quick and simple thanks to special links that send back from Google Transit directly to trenitalia.com.

The new solution adopted by Trenitalia, usable by all travelers through the virtual portal WiFi Station available in the main stations (in Rome also with function Travel Assistant), anticipates the future strategic guidelines on digitization policies of the Italian FS Group always more geared to innovative multi-modal journey planning solutions.

"The partnership with Google - said Barbara Morgante, managing director of Trenitalia - gives further impetus to Trenitalia's policy that looks with more and more attention to foreign markets and enhance the quality of our services, starting with the Frecciarossa to get to the regional trains which are improving, from month to month, in terms of comfort and reliability.”

The collaboration between Trenitalia and Google is also consistent with the objectives that all FS Group aims: to become a real player in mobility in the round, a transportation supplement that can enhance inter-modality and provide effective services to travelers and quality.

Uzbekistan improves its rail network

Waiting for the 25th anniversary of its independence Uzbekistan has launched the Afrosiyob service, an high-speed train on the route Tashkent-Bukhara.

The maximum speed is 250 km per hour and this allows to connect the two cities in 3 hours and 20 minutes instead of the previous seven-eight hours.

This innovation is part of the overall commitment of the President of Uzbekistan for the creation of a single national system of railways through the coherent development of rail transport.

Based on long-term programs, several projects are being implemented in this field.

Over the past 25 years, were in fact built new railway lines and major transit sections have been rebuilt and electrified. New routes have also been opened.

1216 ÖBB in mixed turn in Italy

Up to today the 1216 of the Austrian Railways ÖBB operating in Italy must be registered with the operator which had used them, whether it is Trenord, SAD or Rail Cargo Carrier Italy. This caused great inconvenience in programming and in case of failures, given that it was not possible to replace a locomotive with another belonging to a different company.

From 1 July 2016 all the 1216 ÖBB in service in Italy (001-009 and 011-025, and 032) can be used on any train operated by the three companies mentioned above, thanks to an agreement defined "joint production."

In this way it is solved an Italian anomaly which should simplify procedures and lead to an improvement in rail traffic.

To the Austrian railways the EuroNight trains Germany/Austria - Italy

Since the new schedule, the Austrian railways ÖBB will take from the German railways DB all the existing night services to and from Germany through Austria. In addition, they will also operate the trains going to Switzerland and Italy. At the same time the Hamburg-Vienna trains, Dusseldorf-Vienna (both with the bike transport service), Berlin-Prague-Vienna-Budapest, Munich-Villach-Zagreb and Munich-Vienna-Budapest will remain unchanged.

These the new services:

- Hamburg-Berlin-Basel
- Hamburg-Munich-Innsbruck
- Düsseldorf-Munich-Innsbruck
- Basel-Zurich-Prague

The EuroNight Bologna-Munich will pass no more in Brenner but will be combined with the Rome-Vienna to Tarvisio.

ÖBB will use former DB couchettes and some of these have already been noted with the new wordings of the maintenance of the Austrian operator.

Region, goes on the modernization of Foggia-Potenza railway

The Regional Council has given a favorable opinion, conditioned by environmental compatibility, to the renovation project of the line Foggia-Potenza. The initiative was proposed by Italferr spa, a subsidiary of the group Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane. This is not the path of a new design but the realization of works that insist on the current line, where there are thirty-nine galleries. Objectives are the reduction in travel time, the track adjustment to contemporary standards, the removal of level crossings, the electrification of the line, speeding Itineraries diverted, the construction of subways for travelers, consolidation of landslide areas, the renovation of sidewalks and of public information system. Apparently involving the territories of Foggia, Ordona, Ascoli Satriano, Candela, Rocchetta Sant'Antonio, Melfi, Barile, Rionero in Vulture, Avigliano, Potenza.

The program is part of the "institutional contract for development of the South", director railway Napoli-Bari-Lecce-Taranto, to improve the passenger and freight traffic in the metropolitan areas of Napoli and Bari, and in those of the regions Campania and Puglia through connection Tyrrhenian-Adriatic corridor. In 2010, the CIPE has funded the project "Modernization Foggia-Potenza line" with 149 million Euros.

The work probably will begin October 2, 2017 while the end is scheduled on 2 April 2021. It is recalled that 13 October 2013, still on the Foggia-Potenza line, began the consolidation and renewal of rails and sleepers of 51 km binary. State investment of Euro 51 million with activities that should be concluded by 2018.

Alstom to provide Amtrak with its new generation of high-speed train

Alstom and Amtrak announced today that they have signed a contract for Alstom to design and build 28 new high-speed trains, which will run on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) between Boston and Washington D.C.

Amtrak and Alstom also signed a long-term contract under which Alstom will provide Amtrak with long-term technical support and supply spare components and parts for the maintenance of the new trainsets. Together, these contracts are worth €1.8 billion ($2 billion).

Irpinia Railway: good first take!!

A great success of public and critics for the first trains on the reactivated Irpinia railway along the section between Rocchetta Sant'Antonio and Conza-Andretta. The convoys, which have had as their terminus the station of Foggia, travelled on 22, 23, 26 and 27 August with a good turnout and many photographers in the stations and along the line.

The main protagonist was the convoy, composed of D.345.1142 and D.343.1030 driving carriages "Centoporte", "Corbellini" and type 31000.

In the vestibule of the Fabbricato Viaggiatori of Rocchetta Sant'Antonio it was also set up a small photographic exhibition that traces the history of the station and of the railway line.

The occasion of these trips was the Sponz Fest of Calitri, the Festival created and directed by Vinicio Capossela who not only presided over the inauguration of the reopening of the railway line but also organized the whole thing together with various local associations.

Among the prominent personalities, in addition to Capossela, there were also Giambattista Assanti, director of the film "Ultima fermata" and Ascanio Celestini.

The hope is that this is only the first step towards a revaluation for tourism purposes of this beautiful railway line, which shows once again that if things are done well and with care, the response from the local population and tourists is always very strong.
