After years of neglect in various Roman spots, the Hospital Train of SMOM - Sovereign Military Order of Malta, has reappeared. For several days, two luggage compartments are in fact parked in the Depot of Roma Smistamento, in the area of loading and unloading containers. The two rail vehicles in question have the following markings:
51 83 95-70 072-8 D 51 83 95-70 073-6 D
Of course both of them wear the typical train livery SMOM dark blue and white even if it is abundantly discolored and with showy rust spots that stand copious also on the imperials. At present, the destiny of these unlucky vehicles seems to be tracked.
Two railcars ALe 582, the most modern and capable of carrying a greater number of passengers, will enter in service in the next future on the Modena - Sassuolo. The first will be available by the end of July, the second in September. All this in addition to a series of extraordinary maintenance and upgrading of the infrastructure equipment, for a multi-year investment of the Region of more than 6 million Euros approximately (of which 3.7 already allocated for 2016).
The point on the railway line Modena - Sassuolo has been made by the councilor of Department of Infrastructure and Transport, Raffaele Donini, during the meeting with the President of the Province of Modena, Gian Carlo Muzzarelli, the mayors of Sassuolo, Claudio Pistons, and of Formigine, Maria Costi.
The two railcars, for which it is going to be requested the authorization for the commissioning on the line, will be added to the railcar Firema already available and leave the memory of the old yellow Belgian railcars in service up to some time ago.

Finally will start, a whole series of interventions, such as the rectification of some curves and the repositioning of the signals for the trains, in order to allow the speeding up of some routes.

It started after 14 years the cleaning up of the creek viaduct Formica of Rometta Messinese, where from July 20, 2002 are abandoned the three carriages and the locomotive of the Espresso 1932 "Freccia della Laguna" Palermo-Venezia, which derailed in the late afternoon of that summer. Eight dead and sixty wounded. To communicate the start of work was the deputy mayor of Rometta, Giuseppe Laface.
It is an intervention prepared last year by Trenitalia with a cost of 141,000 Euros. On the spot is operating a specialized company, which thanks to a giant shears has already begun to dissect the first two carriages. Among the interventions to be made, there is also the reclamation of hazardous materials such as asbestos and other fibers, their removal and their final demolition. The most complicated part was left to last. The locomotive will have to be dissect but it is expected that within fifteen days the area will be cleared of cars.

This should be the new livery for the Intercities of Trenitalia. It is still not clear if the brand will be "IC Sun" or "IC Day" but the first coach is ready in the Parco Prenestino yard of Rome. The livery is in light gray with red, green, yellow and blue stripes. The shell is in dark grey. It is not known if this will be the definitive livery or if it will be changed before beeing unveiled.
Roma Express is a service performed by Seatrain company which brings cruisers from the station of Civitavecchia Porto to the one of Roma San Pietro, in the center of the Eternal City and from here to the main attractions of the town. This link was established in 2005 and for this reason 5 DMU ALn 776 owned by FCU – Ferrovia Centrale Umbra then Umbria Mobilità and now Busitalia-Sita Nord were refurbished. Externally they have an astonishing livery based on the colors of Roma, ochre yellow and Pompeian red while internally they have been rebuilt with leather seats, pictures on walls, little curtains and every kind of comfort. Inside there are two compartments, one with 40 seats and one with 36 seats for a total amount of 76. Two DMUs have only one cab while three have two cabs and all have received a nickname according to the following table.
ALn 776.019 FC – One cab – “Piazza Navona” ALn 776.022 FC – One cab – “Via Veneto” ALn 776.059 FC – Two cabs – “Circo Massimo” ALn 776.060 FC – Two cabs – “Colosseo” ALn 776.073 FC – Two cabs – “Città del Vaticano”
These DMUs normally travel simultaneously with the arrive or the departing of ships of cruiser from the harbor of Civitavecchia and they can run in multiple units. During the summer it is more possible to see them along the North Thyrrenian line but some runs can be performed also during the other seasons for particular reasons. In case of maintenance, the 5 DMUs run to Terni and then they go on the Busitalia-Sita Nord tracks to the workshops. For this reason it is also possible to photograph them, even if rarely, also on the line between Roma San Pietro and Terni, which they reach running on the Slow Line between Roma and Orte.
During the most intense season the DMUs normally stands in Civitavecchia Porto or less often on the Viadotto del Gelsomino, the bridge that links the station of Roma San Pietro to the one of Città del Vaticano.
The ALn 776s performing the Roma Express are able to reach 150 km/h and are externally very similar to the ALn 663 of Trenitalia that however can reach a top speed of 130 km/h.
The railway line to the Leonardo da Vinci Airport starts in Roma Termini and stops obviously in the station of Fiumicino Aeroporto. From the main station of the Capital city, trains used on this specific service start from platforms 23 and 24 running to West. The first station that they meet is the one of Roma Tuscolana, placed on the line that goes to Genova and Torino.
Passed it there is the station of Roma Ostiense, characterized by the big and useless hub realized for the World Soccer Cup of Italy in 1990 and almost never used.
Practically joined to this stop there is the one of Roma Trastevere which is different from all the other stations of Roma due to the presence of the old wrought-iron platform roofs. Here the line is divided in two. The right tracks go to Maccarese and then Genova and Torino while the left tracks go on to the suburbs of the city.
The next stop is Villa Bonelli, followed by Magliana that once had a third track. This is then followed by Muratella which is the last one inside “GRA”, the ring that surrounds Roma.
Passed this stop the line arrives in Ponte Galeria. Here it divides one more time. The tracks on the left go to the Airport while the tracks on the right join the ones coming from Roma Trastevere and going to Maccarese and then Genova and Torino. This link, once the only one to reach the Tirrenica Line, is still alive as a bypass when there are problems on the main line via Roma Trastevere. Once left this station, which is the only one outside Roma to have RFI staff inside, the line reaches Fiera di Roma, a stop created for the fair of the Capital city. This is the last stop that can be reached with the normal urban ticket. After it there is instead Parco Leonardo, built near the residential and commercial complex recently erected which forestalls the end of the line in Fiumicino Aeroporto.
On this line there are normally three kinds of trains. The first one is the Leonardo Express, a no-stop service performed by new Alstom Coradia ETR 425. Delivered in 2015, they have gradually replaced the Minuetto convoys that run till their arrive.
A similar service is performed by two Frecciargento that link Venezia with the Leonardo da Vinci. They are compulsory ETR 600/610 due to the short length of the platforms in the station of Fiumicino. In detail they are the Frecciargento 9401/9490 which arrives in Fiumicino at 9.52 and leaves as Frecciargento 9491/9422 at 11.08 and the Frecciargento 9415/9492 which arrives at 13.52 and leaves as Frecciargento 9493/9438 at 15.08.
Moreover there is also a more detailed service performed by TAF EMUs only on the section between Roma Tuscolana and Fiumicino Aeroporto. These trains come from FR1 and, starting and ending in Fara Sabina/Orte, stop in every station.
Trasporto Ferroviario Toscano is a very interesting company in the Italian railway scene. It operates in Tuscany region and owns a variety of trains. Most of them are very old and deserve with no doubt to be immortalized. In this article we will see the actual situation and what it is possible to find regularly on the RFT lines going Northbound from Arezzo to Stia and Southbound from Arezzo to Sinalunga.
The most modern trains that are often used on both lines are the “Elfo” (Elf) of the Coradia family. They are similar to the ones owned by Trenitalia except for the livery. Four complexes are numbered ETT.21÷24 and were built by Alstom starting from 2005.
Another one modern convoy is the one composed by E.464.880 and 3 Vivalto coaches. The loco was delivered in 2010 by Bombardier. Only two years later the coaches were delivered too. This convoy runs only on the North line.
The passenger service is also in the hands of elder trains. There are in fact in service 3 former SNCB EMUs nicknamed “Leprina” and numbered ALe 054. The one numbered 969 travels alone and can be recognized by the fronts still with doors and for the frontal window closed by bars. Instead 961 and 965 always travel coupled with two fronts rebuilt and the ones in the middle blinded. These EMUs normally run on both lines.
Two more EMUs are classified E.624.009 and E.624.012 and they run with their coaches in the middle. These convoys only run in the North line and are normally used only in the early morning and at dinner time to transport students to and from schools. During non-working days the train “sleeps” in the station of Stia.
Moreover there are also 5 locos for TFT, classified EDz 12÷14 and EDz 17-18 and nicknamed “Calimero”. The origin of this nickname is due to the entirely black livery once adopted that recalled the color of the famous cartoon character. Units 12 and 13 have only one cab and run only on the North line with coaches in the middle. Unit 14 has both cabs and still the black livery and is available in the depot.
On the South line travel EDz 17 and 18, both with just one cab and with coaches in the middle. Due to the different length the ones of the North line are called “Calimerini” (little Calimero), while the ones of the South line “Calimeroni” (big Calimero). We must say that they are in turn only in the early morning and at dinner time to transport students to and from schools. During non-working days the train “sleeps” in the station of Sinalunga.
TFT also has freight trains even if not so common. For them there are 2 locos of the Series E.626 and once used by Ferrovie dello Stato. They are E.626.223 and E.626.311. There are also two Diesel locomotives of the Series D.341 numbered D.341.1041 and D.341.1063. Only these have the colorful TFT livery. They are all used for freight trains coming and going to the Baraclit factory in Bibbiena or for the workshops in Porrena, both on the North line.
As shunting loco there are in the end three Diesel locos, the 225.7051, the 225.7069 and the Ne 700.003. The last one is very interesting since it is a locomotive remained in Italy after the end of World War II.
