History of a never-developed train: the ATR 410

At the end of the 1990s, at the same time of the development of the ETR 480, Fiat Ferroviaria of Savigliano developed and carried out a two-element active winding train project capable of reaching 160 km/h on non-electrified railway lines. The aim of the proposal was to promote a series of orders by Ferrovie dello Stato, with a particular orientation towards the use on some Apennine transverse lines, on the Jonica Railroad and the Sardinian Dorsal, which, after the cancellation of the electrification program of monophasic alternate current and the consequent accumulation of the never used E.491/E.492 locomotives, remained without a modernization and speeding program.

The new train, named according to the FS classification ATR 410, should have been in Sardinia in July 1997 for a trial run, but it left the workshops of Savigliano on 21 October of the same year, moving its first steps in Piedmont. It was registered, by the FS, as private rolling 95.83.9.410.991-992 waiting for future decisions or orders.

The ATR 410 consisted of two traction units whose chassis was very similar to that of the head units of the ETR 480 from which it was strictly derived. On each unit there were two Diesel IVECO-AIFO 8217 SRI 10.00 engines supercharged with inter-refrigeration. These ones acted as many as three-phase alternators. The current was supplied to permanent magnet synchronous traction motors using 4 IGBT traction converter while the conversion system was cooled to liquid. The electric engines were one per axle and reached the overall power of the 760 kW at rim. The braking was of the rheostatic and pneumatic compressed air electric type. The overall mass of the rolling stock was 101 t and the maximum speed reached 160 km/h.

Aesthetically it had a wholly white color with an elegant red band on the side with two bigger diagonals at the level of the third window.

A series of services on the Italian rail network highlighted serious cooling problems of newly designed electric motors with permanent magnets. The series of events related to the sale of Fiat Ferroviaria to Alstom and the lack of interest shown by the new railways for regional services (such as that of the railway network in Sardinia) led to the abandonment of the project, which would have required a redesign of the transmission, despite an investment of about 10 million euros.

The ATR 410 was then set off and today it is in the rolling park of the Museo Ferroviario Piemontese di Savigliano (CN). Curiously, after many years, the project has somewhat seen a similar application with the ATR 365/465 of the CAF that run today in Sardinia.

Five unusual vehicles, the ALn DAP to transport prisoners

The DMUs ALn DAP, according to some sources also known as ALn 663 DAP, are Italian railway rolling stock with particular features. They derived from the ALn 663 of Ferrovie dello Stato, from which they took their outward appearance.

The abbreviation DAP is the acronym for Dipartimento Amministrazione Penitenziaria (Penitentiary Administration Department) and the DMUs are operated by Ferrovie dello Stato on behalf of the Ministry of Grace and Justice, who bought them in 1996 for the transportation of prisoners.

Internally, there are cells with minimum services and a compartment service for agents. For some years, the ALn DAP traveled according to a predetermined schedule with weekly shifts. The entry and exit of prisoners from the rolling stock occurred in particular areas of the stations, obviously under strict control of the police.

Granted for their conduct to a group of drivers of Genio Ferrovieri, they have been deactivated since 2005, to serve in the Locomotive Depot of Bologna Centrale.

The engenieers are satisfied about loco's performance but it is not clear yet if CFM will buy these locos.

Railways: with the n.50 ends the supply of trains ETR 400 Frecciarossa 1000

With the delivery of the train number 50, ends the supply of trains ETR 400 Frecciarossa 1000 by Hitachi Rail.

At present, all trains are in service except for train n. 3 used for tests and trains n.6 and n.14 used in dual-composition for pre-service in services that may start in the next future.

Train n. 50 should come into service in the next few days, but there are no confirmations about the news according to which one of the trains should be assigned to RFI as diagnostic train.

Railways: Less and less locomotives E.444R in service

The curtain falls down on locomotives E.444R. From the latest data recorded, the number of the units still in service, belonging to this Group, is of 53 machines.

Therefore, we have fallen below 50% of the units in service compared to the transformed ones that, as we recall, were 113.

Substantially vanished from the fastest lines, such as the ones of the Direttissima Roma - Firenze, today it is still possible to find them on the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian dorsal.

It is not unlikely to think that other units will be shut down in the coming weeks.

Railways: Concluded the aesthetic restoration of E.491.011

According to the Facebook profile of Fondazione FS Italiane, the aesthetic restoration of E.491.011 was completed.

The interventions were carried out at the Foligno hub managed by Fondazione FS with the support of the Association "Turno C".

E.491.011 will be part of the Parco Storico Museale of Fondazione FS and will be exhibited during the recurring events "porte aperte".

Another interesting locomotive is to add to the preserved rolling stock park, which extends more and more.

Clash between trains in Bressanone, two dead and three wounded. Brenner Line Closed

Update 7.54: from the earliest observations, it would have emerged that the tragedy would have been provoked by a malfunction of the cruncher, which would suddenly go into the march autonomously, and crash into the other train. Following the violent impact, the two convoys derailed. Because of the next explosion they got burned.

Update 7.45: the accident - said RFI - occurred at 23.55 last night between two technical vehicles, a crushing machine and a forming machine, owned by the firm Rossi G.C.F., which is carrying out work on the railway line. The traffic is suspended between Fortezza and Bressanone but a replacement service has been activated by bus between Brennero and Bolzano. RFI has already initiated an investigation to determine the causes of the accident.

Rail accident just before midnight on the Brenner line. Two trains clashed near Bressanone: the first balance is of two dead and three serious injuried.

Numerous emergency vehicles (over fifty men from the barracks of Bressanone and Varna) have been brought to the scene to try to provide first aid to the wounded together with the volunteers of the White Cross. There are also police forces, both Polizia and Carabinieri, who will seek to clarify the causes of the terrible crash on which the judiciary has already opened an investigation.

The railway line is currently closed for rescue operations.

According to a first reconstruction, a freight train was over against a convoy that was stationary for work. The only sure thing is that the impact caused a very strong explosion and the two vehicles would be burnt with the touch of the contact line.

Railways: Always less locomotives Group 218 for Germany

The dismissal of locomotives belonging to Group 218 of DB, Deutsche Bahn, continues.

Also due to the continued entry of new material, including the newly-born Diesel locomotives of the Group 245, many 218 are each day deployed or relegated to less important services.

The last to be stalled probably waiting for demolition were on April 6, 218 319, 342, 362, 364, 376, 386, 371 and 372. The 218 191 would also be set aside for supplying spare parts for the 218 486.

According to reports from some German media, units still actually operating on the German network would be about 90.

The Group, dated 1971, will probably be decommissioned by 2018.

Mercitalia Rail: Will it be this the livery of the new Vectron?

Photography is not confirmed, and must be taken with precaution.

Somewhere now it is on the web and on social, the image of what would be the first locomotive Vectron chartered by MRCE for Mercitalia Rail.

The machine would be completely black with the white logo of Mercitalia Rail on the sides.

Given that we cannot publish the photo due to honesty reasons, we show you an artistic impression very faithful to what would be the MIR adopted for these new locomotives.

We do not know if it is a fake or a real livery, let time to give us the answer. Undoubtedly, if it were a real livery, it would be rather appealing.

The original photo shows the logo applied on a Vectron X4E-642, which as MRCE writes on its Facebook profile, is just one of the cars waiting for the Italian approval.

Railways: Parco Storico Operativo, the works on the legendary “Arlecchino” go on

After the transfer of the ETR 252 at the Privata Industry’s plants, the first preliminary steps to mechanical restoration and aesthetic restoration of the train has been made. Raised the four boxes that make up the convoy, trucks and the engines were sent to the Trenitalia’s plant of Ancona for a full review.

Disassembled the interior furniture, windows and all facilities, it was possible to restore the carpentry and the supporting structure. Concluded these activities it is now underway the installation of high, medium and low voltage cables throughout the train. Other operations will be performed for the necessary plant upgrades and for all traction equipment.

The installation of new converters for the supply of utilities on board, of air conditioning, lighting and for recharging the batteries, realized according to the most modern technologies, will be capable to supply the power necessary to meet the needs of the train and to ensure about 50% more power as a "margin of reserve."

In passenger spaces, in the carriage 3 is under construction the space for the on-board bar, with equipment new and modern but according to aesthetic standards consistent with the era. In parallel with these processes, it is in progress the restoration and reconstruction of the seats that will be equipped with new padding and upholstery fabrics, while maintaining their design and original structure.

In addition, to make the “Arlecchino” travel in complete safety, there are several technological upgrades including the installation in the driving cabins of the "Sistema Controllo Marcia Treno" and of the electrical locking of doors.

Railways: farewell to the original livery of the second-generation Pendolino

With the successful delivery today by the Workshop of Bologna of the ETR 460 n.26, the cover with the Frecciabianca film livery of the ETR 460 and ETR 463 is completed.

At present, it remains virtually in its original white and red livery only the ETR 460 n.24, which is also under review at the Workshop of Bologna and looking forward to receive the Frecciabianca livery.

At present, therefore, the beautiful original color scheme with red and white bands that had embellished even the ETR 480 and ETR 485 then can be considered extinct.

High-speed railway Brescia - Verona, the first yard in June 2017

The first sites for the High-speed line Brescia - Verona could already start in June. The news was given by the CEO of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana Maurizio Gentile. By March, the final draft will be approved by the CIPE (Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning).

Gentile’s statements followed by a few days the words of the Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport Umberto Del Basso De Caro, who at the Fair in Verona had expressed the same concept, even if in a more optimistic way by providing, in addition to the rapid opening of the sites, even a duration of work of three years. On the one hand, Gentile reported the estimate to five years (seven for the full operation of trains), on the other hand, he confirmed that the work is ready to start.

The first sites are expected to start from the construction of three tunnels in Lonato (Brescia province), San Giorgio in Salici (Sona) and Colle Baccotto in Peschiera del Garda.

New mark for the 483.103 of DB Cargo Italia

Unusual new mark for the 483.103 of DB Cargo Italia. The machine received the numbering on the top of the front on the left side in dark color, losing the white one in the middle of the red strip between the headlights.

Despite the small change, the logo of NordCargo remains just below as well as on the sides, although this society no longer exists.

It is not impossible that these machines in the future will receive the new livery of corporate identity recently applied to the delivered Vectron of DB Cargo Italia.

Back to run the E.656.607 after the fire

It was fortunately less severe than feared the principle of fire which last January 26 blocked the E.656.607 in the hinterland of Bologna.

The machine, after repair, has been sighted today in regular service at the head of a freight train.

We recall that the locomotive is still wearing the original gray and blue color scheme restored after having received the XMPR livery.

Railroads: Germany, it begins to spread the regional liveries

It begins to spread in Germany the regional liveries to the detriment the red and white ones that so far have dressed almost all the rail vehicles of Deutsche Bahn in the country. After that of the Schleswig-Holstein characterized by the blue with green doors, it is now the turn of the Baden-Württemberg characterized by black, white and yellow.

In the picture, a unit of the Group 612 has just received the new livery and is hooked to a similar unit, which still has the chromatic red DB.

Railways: Goodbye to Crossrail, the company merges into SBB Cargo

The low number of trains made foreshadowed to insiders something not positive that invariably come true.

Crossrail, a railway company born in Switzerland and also operating in Italy is about to merge into SBB Cargo International.

As learned, it would not be anticipated at the time, the passage of the locos currently rented, given that SBB Cargo already has a very large fleet.

The local division of the company, called Crossrail Italia, started its operations officially on January 19, 2004, reaching a peak in sales in 2013 with 10 million euro.

Frecciarossa pulls down the catenary in Arezzo: rescued by the D.341.1063 of TFT

Unexpected event this morning in Arezzo. As reported in a timely manner by the website Qui News Casentino.

A train Frecciarossa of Trenitalia (probably the 9500 Arezzo - Milano Centrale) sheared in the early morning a wire of the catenary. To suffer the worst consequence was the train of Casentino of the company Trasporto Ferroviario Toscano which, because of the incident, could no longer go into the station. 400 high school students from the valley were stranded in Giovi. There were difficulties and delays related to the failure until 8.45 when the traffic of trains was restored but only after 10pm, everything was able to return to normal.

“Due to a fault in the power supply in a segment of the station of Arezzo, caused by a train Frecciarossa of Trenitalia, the circulation has suffered considerable hardship in terms of punctuality. - Explains the note of Trasporto Ferroviario Toscano - Regarding TFT despite the causes are not dependent on it, given the impossibility to reach the terminus station of Arezzo, it has arranged a stop at the exit 1 of Arezzo for all the trains coming from the Casentino to allow all the users to reach the city”.

The curious backstory was “provided” just by TFT since, as evidenced by the images of Qui News Casentino, the few meters required to move the ETR 500 n.51 of Trenitalia - protagonist of the incident - were covered with the aid of the elderly D.341.1063, however, former Ferrovie dello Stato.

We thank for the cooperation Qui News Casentino
